According to the tech support guy, one of the problems may have been the computer's ethernet connection. So I bought - and installed - a NIC card. It's still not working.

When Kevin said you had replaced the cable and the router, the next thing I'd have looked at was the NIC. But, that is assuming I was certain it was a hardware issue.
